​IRMASYS P.C. is a Greece-based private company specializing in smart water management solutions, particularly for agriculture. Headquartered in municiplality of Igoumenitsa, region unit of Thespotia, region of Epirus, the company focuses on developing, installing, and operating advanced systems to optimize water resource utilization. A flagship product of IRMASYS, IRMA_SYS is a decision support system designed for efficient irrigation management over large agricultural areas. Also ΙΤ platforms are developed by IRMASYS for storing and managing hydrological and meteorological data.

Solution & Product

The company has developed IRMA_SYS, an integrated efficient irrigation management platform. Its basic component is the participatory decision support system (DSS) which is designed to cover extensive areas. It uses data from agrometeorological stations, weather forecast services and field specific sets of parameters, and runs innovative models to provide irrigation recommendations at farm level, and summarised data for water delivery network managers. Farmers can use it to schedule irrigation while irrigation water management organizations can use it to decide about water limitations and allocations, set water savings and environmental goals and document decisions regarding water costing and pricing. Additionally, IRMA_SYS can be used in the framework of quality systems like integrated crop management, for the calculation of environmental impact indices like the water footprint and for environmental product declarations. The approach also includes support and consulting services.

Innovation & Scalability

IRMA_SYS platform is designed to cover extensive areas, where irrigation networks serve hundreds or even thousands of users. It is reliable, simple and value for money solution. The main innovation that makes IRMA_SYS differentiate from the competitors is that it needs minimum or even no hardware to be installed in each field. It uses the model of “virtual weather station” (Tsirogiannis I.L., Malamos N., 2017. Virtual agrometeorological stations system. Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation, Confirmation of prototype for use Certification No. 20160200073 (https://www.obi.gr/obi/Portals/0/ImagesAndFiles/Files/EDBI/2017/A/EDBI_A_2017_07.pdf, p. 16)) and in-house improved FAO models to produce field specific hydrological balances. Also, an innovative approach is that the platform, except of the DSS that provides irrigation recommendations at farm level and summarised data for water delivery network managers, also includes support and consulting services that build consciousness and capacities for efficient water use for irrigation. We are following a participatory approach, in the framework of which our development, management and consulting team is in close collaboration with agricultural water managers and consultants.

Traction & achievements

IRMA_SYS is mainly designed for governmental agencies, irrigation water management organisations, agricultural consultants and agricultural production companies that handle large agricultural areas. IRMA_SYS already covers three areas that sum about 45.000 ha in Greece while there is a continuous interest for new installations. We are proud that international organisations like FAO and ITU refer to IRMA_SYS as case study and good practice. Important milestones for our company are a) to install IRMA_SYS to more than 50% of the 20 largest irrigation water management organisations of Greece (https://www.minagric.gr/for-farmer-2/eggeiesbeltioseis) and b) to install IRMA_SYS in other countries.

Our core team is consisted by: Christos Myriounis, Survey Engineer and Geologist, PhD Hydrology (more than 15 years experience) in hydrology is our CEO Ioannis Tsirogiannis, Agronomist - Agricultural Engineer, PhD. Prof., expert in irrigation system design and management (more than 20 years of experience) is our chief project’s manager Demetrios Koutsogiannis, Civil Engineer, Hydrologist, PhD. Prof. Em., expert hydrologist (more than 40 years of experience), is our chief hydrology scientist Nikolaos Malamos, Agronomist - Agricultural Engineer, PhD. Prof., expert in irrigation system design and management (more than 20 years of experience) is our chief irrigation water modelling scientist Antonis Christophides, Civil Engineer, IT Engineer MSc., expert in hydrological software development (more than 20 years of experience) is our chief information technology scientist. We aim IRMA_SYS to be synonymous to consciousness and capacity building for efficient irrigation water use!
