About
-Even existing in mid-mature phase, additive manufacturing technologies currently are not widely employed to produce functional parts, through re-design. In other word, AM-thinking and thinking-AM technological and societal visions are missing. Indicative aspects that may be considered as AM drawbacks are the part size, anisotropic properties, costs, manufacturing efficiency, material variety and manufacturing limitations such as accuracy, surface quality, low speed that hybrid manufacturing processes may overpass such limitations. Therefore, material selection/design and redesign strategies are critical, particularly when considering materials for engineered structural applications and custom advanced products manufacturing through additive manufacturing technologies.
Solution & Product
-We perform extensive material selection procedure for candidate materials considering that must be able to be produced as feedstock in amenable for to specific AM process, to be easily processable and efficiently post-processed while presenting the required performance characteristics in service. We consider complex feedstock preparation procedures when controlled properties and structure are desired, in various applications, transportation, construction, automotive and aerospace due to mechanical properties, design flexibility, low-cost and high performance, for AM is a significant challenge. Contrary to SoA closed (in terms of operation/process/feedstock freedom) AM systems (specific materials, expected benchmark quality), we focus on the customization of additive manufacturing systems both in hardware and software tools to surpass commercially available systems limitations to unravel product design features in terms of material properties and manufacturability.
Innovation & Scalability
-Albeit Additive Manufacturing research and company integration of the technologies has progressed from rapid prototyping to rapid tooling and now to a future in direct manufacturing, having integrated numerous manufacturing techniques to develop an extensive range of technologies of potential interest to industry; the most Additive Manufacturing services within Greece and EU countries is limited to systems sales and service bureaus restraining the assessment and process optimization to manufacturability troubleshooting. Therefore, the product development phases may not achieve optimum component performance, due to misconception from not qualitied experts in the distinct product development phases. BioG3D has four established services covering product and novel material design for the Additive manufacturing promoting the adaptability in all the distinct phases of product development, including consideration of design for functionality material properties, manufacturing systems capabilities and product reuse and recycling after use phase. The abovementioned services constitute core processes for all the distinct phases of custom product development; from conceptualization to final short run production, including consultation, design-material-process optimization, and product evaluation services.
Traction & achievements
-BioG3D owns range of AM systems covering most technologies related to polymeric and composite materials such as Fused filament fabrication, Vat photopolymerization, Melt electro-writing, Direct ink writing, Robocasting, Electrospinning, Binder Jetting. We are involved in nine EU funded research projects with roles related to design for performance optimization, advanced material development, product prototyping through AM. A zero-waste approach through waste materials management and reuse as additive manufacturing feedstock material in FFF process has been established. A custom toolhead prototype for integration of continuous fiber printing capabilities in desktop AM has been manufactured. A computational design definition for customization of orthotic devices considering aspects such as material properties, manufacturing process, recycling, and patients' requirements has been developed. BioG3D has developed modular customizable solutions for indoor environmental quality optimization.
