About

The cost of electricity is the second largest expense on the budget forecast of every hotel establishment, right after labour cost. Thema Renewable Energy (TRE) is a start-up facilitator that uses the sun, wind, sea currents, geothermy, hydroelectric pipping systems and green hydrogen technology and applications to produce sufficient and cheap energy available to hotels, resorts and high-end tourist establishments.

Solution & Product

We produce green hydrogen using water electrolysis by splitting water molecules into oxygen gas and hydrogen gas using electricity (by solar panels). Through electrolysis, we convert electrical energy into a storable fuel namely hydrogen gas. We then burn hydrogen gas and produce cheap electricity using turbines in a power plant on a 24/7 basis. The electricity produced is sent to the grid and then to the hotel cluster whilst the excess (if any) is sent to the electricity storage facility. Hoteliers will use a 'pay-as-you-go' Kilowatt hours (abbreviated as KWh) model, whereas they prepay the amount of KWh electricity units they forecast they will require to run their hotel in a specific period of time i.e. it is estimated that the average requirement of a 5 star hotel room is 6700 KWh/per year. A 100 room 5 star hotel establishment requires 670 MWh/per year. Hoteliers would buy a 'silver, gold, platinum package' to receive 50%, 60% or 70% discount compared to DEH accordingly.

Innovation & Scalability

Technological innovation will be applied as per below: Firstly, Electrical Energy Storage (EES) will be used as a process of converting electrical energy produced from electrolysis from a power network into a form that can be stored for converting back to electrical energy when needed. Such a process enables electricity to be produced at times of either low demand, low generation cost or from intermittent energy sources and to be used at times of high demand, high generation cost or when no other generation means is available. Secondly, by using an innovative platform seawater osmosis we will achieve in producing sufficient water to use in electrolysis to produce green hydrogen accordingly Value proposition; we will produce clean, uninterrupted, bulk electricity for hotels in massive quantities to cover high demand periods at very competitive rates ranging from 50%-70% lower than the National Electricity Supplier and competitor electricity suppliers. We aim to start with a small hotel cluster of 10 hotels on a specific island in Greece within two kilometres from one another and build a micro-grid. Our expansion plan is to grow our cluster by reaching 100 hotels on the island within 2 years from the commence of operation and reach all hotels in 6 islands in Cyclades within 5 years of operation.

Traction & achievements

We were incorporated in November 2022 and we aim to have our MVP in operation by the end of 2023.
