About
Athenian Nexus is dedicated to the systematic development and management of innovation ecosystems that drive collaboration, creativity, and growth. We recognize that while many organizations adopt the concept of ecosystems, few approach it strategically. We focus on how to build successful ecosystems that foster long-lasting partnerships between established businesses, startups, research institutions, universities, and local authorities. Our goal is to bridge the gap between innovation and real-world application, empowering our partners to leverage ecosystems as a foundation for product development, knowledge sharing, and competitive growth.
Solution & Product
Athenian Nexus develops and manages innovation ecosystems that enable businesses, startups, research institutions, and public bodies to co-create innovative products and services. At its core is a proprietary methodology grounded in published of academic research and AUEB licensed know-how, tested across EU-funded programmes over more than a decade. Services are structured across three tiers. Tier 1 connects organisations to existing innovation networks — including Start For Future (25+ European universities), and local innovation hubs — providing access to startups, researchers, and investors. Tier 2 delivers a structured programme to address a specific organisational challenge, sourcing and matching startups and research teams to co-develop tailored solutions. Tier 3 designs and builds a full innovation ecosystem around a specific organisation, covering stakeholder mapping, interdisciplinary working groups, solution scouting, pitching events, and ongoing ecosystem management. To scale this offering, Athenian Nexus is developing a digital platform that automates needs analysis, stakeholder matching, and co-creation facilitation — transforming the service from a consultancy model into a technology-assisted solution deployable across sectors and geographies simultaneously.
Innovation & Scalability
Athenian Nexus introduces a dual layer of innovation. The first is methodological: a proprietary framework grounded in research, exclusively licensed from AUEB, and validated through peer-reviewed research and real-world implementation across EU-funded programmes for over a decade. This makes Athenian Nexus the only provider in the Greek market offering a structured, research-backed approach to designing and managing innovation ecosystems — going well beyond conventional consultancy or acceleration services. The second layer is technological: a digital platform in development that will automate the most resource-intensive parts of the ecosystem-building process, including needs analysis, startup and partner matching, and co-creation facilitation. This platform directly addresses the primary constraint on growth — the human time required per engagement — allowing Athenian Nexus to serve multiple clients simultaneously across sectors and geographies without proportional cost increases. Together, these two layers create a scalable model: the methodology provides the repeatable intellectual framework, while the platform provides the operational infrastructure to deploy it at scale. The tiered service structure further supports scalability, enabling clients to enter at low commitment and progressively move toward higher-value engagements as the relationship matures.
Traction & achievements
Athenian Nexus is at an early but promising stage of development. The company was officially approved as an AUEB spin-off in July 2024, following the submission of the founding application in October 2023, with an exclusive licence granted for the commercial exploitation of the underlying research methodology. Since then, the team has begun delivering innovation ecosystem services to a number of organisations, including EY, AB Vassilopoulos (Ahold Delhaize), DEI, Lamda Development, and Netcompany, among others. These early engagements have helped validate the methodology across different sectors and provided initial revenue to support operations. The Athenian Nexus Summit has been established as an annual event hosted at AUEB, bringing together startups, established companies, researchers, and investors. The event serves both as a knowledge-sharing platform and as a business development channel for the company. Development of a digital platform — designed to automate needs analysis, stakeholder matching, and co-creation facilitation — is currently underway. This represents the next significant milestone for the company, as it will enable a more scalable service delivery model. The team considers these early results encouraging, while acknowledging that the company is still in its growth phase with significant work ahead.
Team & Why Us
The company was founded by Prof. Katerina Pramatari (AUEB proffessor and Partner at Uni.Fund, Dr. Angeliki Karagiannaki (Director of ACE incubator, lecturer at AUEB, and senior researcher in the filed of innovation/entrepreneurship), and Dr. Stratos Baloutsos (fmr Head of the AUEB TTO, and senior researcher in the field of entrepreneurial/innovation ecosystems); the latter serving as managing partner. The team was then strengthened with the additions of Dr. Vasiliki Chronaki responsible for overseeing service delivery, Dr. Vasiliki Koniakou our DPO and IP/Ethics Expert, and mr. Angelos Athanasiou as head of finance. The company's operations are also supported by a group of more than 10 talented individuals (from IT to startup experts and salespeople) who support depending on the needs that arise. Athenian Nexus combines a research-validated methodology, an established client base, and a clear path to scale. The tiered model generates early revenue while building relationships that progress to higher-value engagements. A digital platform in development will automate core processes, reducing cost-per-client and enabling multi-sector deployment at scale. Backed by AUEB's network and pan-European connections, the company is positioned to expand beyond Greece with minimal additional cost.
