Cloud Signals is a startup technology company set up in Athens, Greece during the Covid Pandemic to offer specialized space related and Satcom centric products and services. Founders of Cloud Signals carry extensive experience in the Satellite Communications and Defense Industries as well as in Academia. Their international exposure and relevant experience are the keys to our heritage. Cloud Signals leverage on the success of the people, each one in their own expertise and domain. Cloud Signals people are using their space industry experience to improve terrestrial business applications and connectivity. Cloud Signals strength lies in the close ties with the European Space Agency, government stakeholders locally and internationally as well as with the major players in the space industry worldwide.

Solution & Product

The product proposed addresses the need of all-in-one solution as a service (NaaS) for solving the high-cost distant network coverage of 5G networks. The specific solution incorporating all necessary network elements needed to connect a 5G edge node to the core network via a satellite path will target a gap in the local market and will address the field of cooperation of the two different worlds of cellular and satellite operators. This product bundle will consist of three main parts namely, the satellite connection (RF and baseband), the 5G Edge interface components (collocated with customers’ gNB and eNB) and the housing with power supplies and electrical parts. The bundle will be installed in distant unserved and underserved places extending the MNO’s network to reach groups of customers on a cost-efficient basis thereby avoiding investment on expensive core network infrastructures.

Innovation & Scalability

The product under development is utilizing Satellite communication broadband or VNO technologies of known vendors e.g., iDirect, 5G Edge functionalities from cellular technologies and software developments or cloud computing like Microsoft Azure and AWS to operate the edge network enhancements of the product and connect to the core network of the MNOs. It is categorized as downstream space technology as the basic idea stems directly from satellite communications and 5G convergence currently happening at 3GPP globally. Currently as we stand technology-wise on a global level, there are three possible architectures that can be employed namely, the traditional 5G-GEO satellite backhaul offering a good solution for data and IoT (it introduces high delays and might be prohibitive for normal voice calls), the 5G-LEO satellite backhaul offering an ideal solution for all kinds of 5G services (LEO constellations are evolving as of today) and finally the 5G-satellite convergence where the satellite path is also using 5G protocol without any overheads and encapsulations to proprietary protocols like DVB etc (direct 5G communication). Greece in principle is a country consisting of very high mountains and many small islands a fact that brings a strong headache to the business case of MNOs when it comes to investments and payback to cover 100% of the country. The 5G backhaul product comes to solve this riddle of investing versus payback when it comes to use cases like passenger boats.
