About

Lion Alternative Energy (Lion) is an innovative, deep-tech, private company founded in 2010 in London to develop the next generation of advanced materials for the critical industries of the future – CleanTech, Medtech and DeepTech. We operate through our subsidiary near the famous Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel of its day, in the Peloponnese region. We are focused on developing our advanced nano-material coatings technology for applications in medical implants, advanced manufacturing, environmental technologies, batteries, and the hydrogen economy. Our technology allows the controlled, multi-layered application of coatings in one-pass including all the way up to diamond-like-hardness. Our diamond hard nano-carbon coatings deliver benefits in terms of lifespan, reduced wear-and-tear, lower bioreactivity, efficiency, and, in medical settings, reduced drug requirements, faster recovery and reduced complications. OUR HISTORY Identifying the need for the world to move away from its reliance on fossil fuels and speed the development of advanced technologies, Lion was founded in 2010. Since 2018, Lion has focused on developing its advanced nano-material coating technology. In 2026, a US patent was secured for the key technology. In 2026, taking advantage to Greece's attractive innovation environment, Lion founded a research centre in Loutraki where it is now developing its first commercial-scale prototype.

Solution & Product

THE PROBLEM The next generation of materials and coatings will be based on nano structuring to deliver enhanced wear, safety and precise performance characteristics. Implantology and biomedical engineering rely extensively on metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials, whose surfaces significantly influence their long-term clinical performance. Over the past two decades, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been increasingly used in medical devices due to their high hardness, low friction coefficient, and biocompatibility and diamond-nano-carbon (DNC) in aerospace and automotive. Despite this progress, current DLC & DNC coating technologies used worldwide remain limited by their monolithic structure, uncontrolled bonding ratios, poor adhesion on complex geometries, and lack of tailored functionality for specific medical applications. OUR PRODUCT Our key technology is a Patented Multilayer Ion-Assisted Nanocarbon Coating Technology which delivers: - Multilayer sp³ / sp² / sp¹ carbon architectures - High-sp³ diamond-like performance with stress compensation - Superior ion-diffusion barrier properties - Low-temperature deposition for medical and hybrid substrates The technology enables precise control over the carbon bonding environment, film architecture, and functional layer composition during a single deposition process.

Innovation & Scalability

INNOVATION Our key innovations are: - DIAMOND-LION™ TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM - Multifunctional Combined Coating Unit (Ionized-Arc + Magnetron + EB-PVD) - Hydrogen-Reactive Powder Production - Electron-Beam Refining & Recycling Unit SCALABILITY Our platform is an enabling technology for several applications in: - Medical Implants (Dental, Orthopaedic, Cardiovascular) - Industrial & Automotive Wear Systems - Aerospace and High-Temperature Engineering Components - Galvanic Coating Substitution Technologies

Traction & achievements

Lion has established its first research centre in the Peloponnese region and attracted the interest of international organisations to cooperate in its development including Imperial College London, and Hannover Medical School. In 2026, Lion received its first US patent for its innovative coatings technology and has various European applications pending.

Team & Why Us

We are Engineering Surfaces for Long-Life Performance, Safety, and Biocompatibility in a €60 billion market. In Lion we have the knowledge, expertise, and shared willingness to bring into market new technologies that deliver on the promise of advanced nano-materials. We have a deep understanding of Diamond-Like-Carbon coating technologies and their applications. Our team encompasses both the engineering/science background (Academia, PhD, MSc) and business expertise to deliver on our development plan. Our team has extensive entrepreneurial and managerial experience including with early-stage technology projects and grant management. We have a large network of industrial and academic partners that support us. Lion’s team has been working together for more than 20 years based on a shared ethos of Trust, Credibility, Flexibility, High quality, and Hard-work. Our team culture is strong, and we have persevered through several challenges that would make others quit. We are flexible, creative thinkers and engaged in this journey.

Funding Needs

Total development will require Euro30 million which we hope to fund 50% from European Union support and additional support from local Greek financial institutions. Lion will require 8 million Euro in equity funding currently being raised through a private over the next 2-year period that will be allocated as follows: 60% Product Development (TRL4 to TRL6), 20% Marketing/Sales, 15% Operation/Inventory, 3% Legal and 2% other.
