About
Meta Materials Europe is a wholly owned subsidiary SME of Nasdaq-listed Meta Materials Inc, a deep-tech company developing applications of novel engineered materials, known as metamaterials. The Athens office focuses on biomedical, electro-optics, and telecoms applications and conducts R&D in design, prototyping, and algorithmic development. Our medical applications include the development of a medical scanner for stroke and a non-invasive glucose monitor.
Solution & Product
Our first targeted product in the healthcare space has been developed by our parent company, which has developed GlucoWise, a non-invasive system for glucose monitoring that combines two electromagnetic (EM) sensors with metamaterial technology and machine learning algorithms. GlucoWise is a dual sensor device which uses low power radio wave and near infrared measurements. META Europe is developing advanced knowledge-aware ML software, which can reach clinical accuracy and take the product to market. This challenge is tackled by physics/physiology/biology-informed machine learning software currently under development in our offices in Greece.
Innovation & Scalability
As an R&D subsidiary of a deep-tech and highly innovative Nasdaq-listed company, Meta Europe's mandate is to create highly innovative solutions in its targeted areas. Its parent company's access to financial markets and major tech companies worldwide guarantees that these innovative solutions can scale into viable commercial offerings through various means. In the medical space, our aim is to partner with major medical OEM's for co-developing the medical products of interest. For example, our targeted non-invasive Glucose sensor has the potential to transform community health and care by becoming the first clinically accurate, non-invasive glucose monitoring system for diabetes patients. Success in demonstrating accurate non-invasive glucose monitoring in humans will enable META Europe to execute its commercial exploitation plan. META has been in conversations with various medical OEM’s, which are committed to enter a commercial exploitation partnership once the desired accuracy is demonstrated in human trials. Regarding intellectual property (IP), the parent META has already patented the GlucoWise technology in various countries, and has thus freedom to operate in the area.
Traction & achievements
Leveraging its team's strong academic background, Meta Materials Europe has a very strong academic track record and know-how in the areas of its R&D activities. This allows the team to test the technical feasibility of its innovations, and to also participate in collaborative proposals and projects which expand its expertise and knowledge domain. Considering again the example of the development approach for the glucose sensor, its scientific principles have been validated and published in several, peer-reviewed, highly cited journal papers. From an R&D perspective, the prototype system has been developed in the UK through various iterations, and the current prototype is the world's first to combine a radio frequency (RF) and near-infrared (NIR) sensor. META Europe has started applying ML algorithms to preclinical human trial data (2022) further improving the estimation of glucose. We have already established a collaboration with diabetes medical experts in a Greek hospital where we are planning on conducting the first clinical trials with patients with diabetes in 2023.
Team & Why Us
META Europe’s team has been established under the supervision of Dr. Panagiotis Kosmas, whose previous work has focused on R&D towards disruptive microwave medical devices. The team currently comprises nine technical experts (7 PhD's) and one operations manager. The engineering team combines expert experience in RF and metamaterial devices, mechanical engineering and design, materials, and ML algorithms. Meta Europe's growth is part of the parent's company plan to expand its R&D activities in Greece, with a sales team also planned to be created within the next 2-3 years. In addition to expanding its R&D services to the parent company, Meta Materials Europe is seeking opportunities to engage in new projects and collaborations with other companies in Greece and beyond. As member of the Elevate Greece network, Meta Europe hopes to establish a strong presence in the Greek ecosystem.
Funding Needs
As a subsidiary of Meta Materials Inc., Meta Materials Europe is looking to support or develop further some of its critical applications in the medical, 5G, and electro-optics space. For this purpose, Meta Materials Europe is funded by its parent company but would also welcome funding opportunities from third parties (in agreement with its parent company), which could accelerate its R&D activities towards commercialization and product development. Moreover, Meta Materials Europe is actively seeking funding to apply its R&D expertise (antenna and metamaterial design, machine learning for sensing and imaging, composite materials and 3D printing) to innovative projects through proposals submitted to national and international funding bodies together with other academic institutions, research centers, and industry.
