About

MoistX is an Earth Observation and AI company founded in 2025 and incubated at ESA BIC Greece. We turn satellite data into accurate, high-resolution soil moisture intelligence. Agriculture consumes nearly 70% of global freshwater at a time when climate change is intensifying drought, water scarcity and irrigation inefficiency. Yet decision-makers still face a hard trade-off: in-field sensors are accurate but expensive and cover only a few points, while satellite soil moisture products are affordable but too coarse and imprecise for operational use. MoistX closes this gap. Our cloud-based Data-as-a-Service platform delivers soil moisture at 20 m resolution with RMSE ~0.06 m³/m³, refreshed after every satellite pass, with no hardware to install at a low cost. Data is consumed through APIs, dashboards and tailored reports. We serve four B2B segments: agritech companies and agribusinesses that need field-level irrigation insight (priority segment), insurers building parametric drought and crop products, government agencies and water managers responsible for allocation and drought monitoring, and satellite operators seeking independent validation of new missions. Our mission is to make water-related decisions in agriculture measurable and evidence-based — cutting water use, operational cost and climate risk at continental scale.

Solution & Product

MoistX delivers soil moisture intelligence through a cloud-based Data-as-a-Service platform. Proprietary machine-learning models fuse Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), multispectral and thermal satellite imagery with meteorological data and ground observations, producing estimates at 20 m spatial resolution with RMSE ~0.06 m³/m³, updated after each satellite acquisition. Delivery is fully digital and integration-friendly: - REST API for embedding soil moisture layers directly into existing agritech, irrigation or risk platforms - Web dashboards and analytics tools for non-technical users - Customized reports, historical analyses and feasibility studies On top of the core data layer we build higher-value services: irrigation monitoring, drought indicators and indices, historical soil moisture reconstructions, and climate-risk analytics for insurance and public authorities. The roadmap adds UAV-based high-resolution mapping using GNSS-Reflectometry, targeting applications where sub-field detail is essential, and native support for next-generation SAR missions (NISAR, ROSE-L, BIOMASS). Because the solution is hardware-free, customers avoid installation, maintenance and calibration costs entirely. Coverage is immediate and continuous over any field, region or country which is a fundamental advantage over point-based sensor networks, at low cost.

Innovation & Scalability

Innovation. Most competitors rely on a single data source — ground sensors, thermal imagery, or coarse soil moisture satellite products. MoistX fuses SAR, multispectral, thermal, meteorological and in-situ data within one machine-learning framework. Our strongest differentiator is deep expertise in SAR and InSAR processing, including interferometric and polarimetric features that are well established in research but rarely exploited commercially. This scientific foundation is public and verifiable through peer-reviewed publications and our open-source INSAR4SM software. Competitive advantages: - Accuracy: RMSE ~0.06 m³/m³ - Resolution: 20 m, versus kilometre-scale public products - Update frequency: after every satellite pass - Hardware-free, fully cloud-native architecture - Early-adopter access to NISAR, plus readiness for ROSE-L and BIOMASS Scalability. The model is software-driven: once processing infrastructure is deployed, new customers, crops and countries are served with minimal marginal cost. Growth comes from geographic expansion, new verticals (insurance, climate risk, food security, carbon and soil health) and partnerships with satellite operators and agritech platforms. Risks — business development capacity, adoption cycles in agriculture, data-provider dependence and cloud costs — are mitigated through partnerships, ESA BIC support, multi-mission redundancy, cloud automation and continuous expansion of ground-truth datasets.

Traction & achievements

Founded in 2025, MoistX has moved from research to revenue-generating validation within its first year: - Selected for the highly competitive ESA BIC Greece incubation cohort. - Built and deployed an operational API (TRL 5–6) delivering soil moisture estimates at RMSE ~0.06 m³/m³ from multi-modal satellite data — already used by initial users. - Secured a formal commercial contract with ICEYE under Axis-3 of the Greek National Satellite Space Programme, for a feasibility study over low-biomass Greek regions. - Selected as an early adopter of the NASA/ISRO NISAR mission, giving privileged access to next-generation L-band SAR data. - Established collaborations with OroraTech, SatVu, ENVRIO, NTUA, AUA, Planetek and the Hellenic Space Agency. - Published peer-reviewed scientific research and released INSAR4SM as open-source software, establishing technical credibility in the SAR community. - Demonstrated pilot applications across irrigation optimization, drought monitoring and locust prediction. - Generated strong inbound interest from agritech organizations evaluating API integration. - Featured in Forbes Greece. Together these validate the technology, the commercial demand and the company's standing within the European space ecosystem.

Team & Why Us

Dr. Kleanthis Karamvasis — Co-Founder & CEO. PhD in Microwave Remote Sensing from the National Technical University of Athens, with over 10 years in Earth Observation and SAR/InSAR processing applied to soil moisture, flood and drought management and climate applications. He has led and delivered research projects with ESA and national agencies, and authored peer-reviewed publications and the open-source INSAR4SM package. He leads strategy, R&D, partnerships, fundraising and product innovation. Michail Karamvasis — Co-Founder. Chemical Engineer (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and an active olive oil producer. He brings the customer's perspective from inside the field, covering agronomic insight, market analysis, business development, customer engagement, dissemination and sales support. Why us. Soil moisture retrieval from SAR is a genuinely hard scientific problem; few teams worldwide combine the depth of InSAR expertise required with direct, daily exposure to farming realities. That pairing keeps our models scientifically rigorous and our product grounded in what growers will actually pay for and use. It is reinforced by an ecosystem of academic and industrial partners — NTUA, AUA, ICEYE, OroraTech, SatVu, Planetek, ENVRIO and the Hellenic Space Agency — and by ESA BIC Greece.

Funding Needs

MoistX is seeking €450k to move from validated prototype and first paying users to a commercially scaled DaaS product over 24 months (covering two full growing agricultural seasons). Planned allocation: 1. Team — €271k (60%): two full-time co-founders on modest salaries, one EO/ML engineer from month 3, and one business developer from month 7. 2. Cloud & data infrastructure — €70k (16%): processing and storage, plus expansion of ground-truth datasets across new crops, soils and climatic zones. 3. Sales & market entry — €60k (13%): pilots, demonstrations, agritech events and direct B2B conversion of the existing pipeline. 4. Next-generation R&D — €30k (7%): NISAR, ROSE-L and BIOMASS integration, and the UAV + GNSS-Reflectometry prototype. 5. IP, legal & admin — €19k (4%). Average burn: ~€19k/month. 24-month milestones: - TRL 8, operational coverage in 4+ European countries - 4 paying subscription customers, anchored by 1–2 agritech platform partners integrating our layer via API - €100k ARR, at >80% gross margin - First contracts in insurance and the public sector Because processing is fully automated, marginal cost per additional customer approaches zero — each new partner scales revenue without scaling headcount. The round is complemented by non-dilutive sources — ESA and Horizon Europe programmes, national space funding, and project-based studies (€10k–€100k each) extending efffective runway beyond 30 months.
