About
Virtual Red Air (VRA) is a European defence synthetic-training company building the cognitive edge of modern air power. We combine current-generation fighter-instructor expertise with AI-enabled, distributed synthetic training to help air forces train, prepare and perform in complex operational environments. VRA delivers an integrated synthetic-training capability rather than a standalone simulator. Its approach combines mission simulation, immersive VRSIM cockpits, distributed synthetic training integration and scarce instructor expertise, augmented by VRAI, the company’s proprietary multi-agent AI platform. VRAI captures and structures instructor judgement to support scenario engineering, credible synthetic adversaries, real-time coaching and automated after-action review. The company builds on a validated blueprint: its founding team played a central role in designing and operating the Hellenic Air Force Synthetic Training Squadron, a NATO-compatible capability developed using cost-effective COTS technologies. VRA now industrialises and scales that experience into a sovereign, interoperable and service-based training capability for NATO, EU and allied air forces. Alongside its core defence mission, VRA operates a genuine dual-use and commercial business line, applying the same platform, methodology and capture-and-coach capabilities to leadership and resilience programmes for high-pressure civilian teams, as well as civil-protection and crisis-management training.
Solution & Product
Virtual Red Air delivers Distributed Synthetic Training as a Service (DSTaaS), an integrated, instructor-led capability designed to provide realistic, scalable and continuously evolving operational training. Rather than selling a standalone simulator, VRA combines immersive VRSIM training stations, deployable VRBOX infrastructure, distributed simulation and VRAI, its proprietary multi-agent AI platform, into a complete training service. The service covers the full training cycle: training-needs analysis and syllabus alignment, mission and scenario design, execution, real-time monitoring and coaching, assessment and automated after-action review. Training outcomes continuously feed the syllabus and scenario libraries, creating an evolving training environment rather than isolated simulation events. The capability supports pilots and other operational personnel, from individual skill development to complex collective and multinational training. Its distributed architecture allows participants and training assets in different locations to operate within a common synthetic environment, while also enabling integration with existing customer systems and live training when required. The same core platform and capture-and-coach methodology extends into commercial and dual-use applications, supporting leadership and resilience programmes for high-pressure civilian teams, as well as civil-protection and crisis-management training.
Innovation & Scalability
VRA’s innovation lies in transforming synthetic training from a hardware-centric simulator product into an AI-enabled, distributed and outcome-based service. Its proprietary VRAI multi-agent platform captures and structures current-generation instructor judgement, progressively augmenting scenario design, coaching, assessment and after-action review. This combines operational and doctrinal expertise with scalable software intelligence, while COTS-based XR technology enables affordable, rapidly deployable and reconfigurable training environments. VRA’s defensibility is built around data and expertise rather than hardware. Each training mission enriches its Tactical Event Ontology and improves the platform’s reusable knowledge layer, creating a compounding data advantage while customer-sensitive data remains sovereign. The model is inherently scalable: software, AI agents and structured knowledge can be deployed across customer environments at near-zero marginal cost, while modular VRSIM/VRBOX infrastructure scales predictably with demand. Growth is therefore driven primarily by utilisation and recurring Training-as-a-Service, rather than capital-intensive infrastructure. The same technology and methodology can also scale into commercial leadership and resilience, civil-protection and crisis-management applications.
Traction & achievements
Virtual Red Air builds on a validated operational foundation. Its founding team played a central role in the development and operation of advanced synthetic-training capability within the Hellenic Air Force, providing the company with direct hands-on experience in designing, implementing and operating realistic, distributed training environments. The company is already embedded in the European and NATO defence-innovation ecosystem. Its founders participate as recognised experts and evaluators in national and European defence-innovation initiatives, while VRA is actively engaged with European defence-simulation activities and relevant institutional networks. VRA is also building early commercial and investor momentum through ongoing partnership discussions, market engagement and external validation of its team, proposition and European growth opportunity. The underlying market need is increasingly validated by the wider transition of allied air forces towards persistent, distributed synthetic training.
Team & Why Us
Virtual Red Air brings together senior operational leadership, current-generation fighter-instructor expertise, aerospace and simulation engineering, programme management, quality assurance and corporate/financial capability. Nikolaos Makrygiannis – Strategy & Market Development: Major General (ret.) with senior NATO, synthetic-training and air-defence expertise. Apostolos Papadopoulos – Operations & Training Lead: Brigadier General (ret.), fighter pilot and weapons instructor with deep experience in tactics and multinational synthetic training. Panos Touzopoulos – Technology & Programme Lead: Former Air Force officer, design engineer and senior programme manager with expertise in electronic warfare, VR/MR and simulation systems. Evangelos Baltadoros – Finance & Corporate Development: Former Army officer, business consultant, software engineer and financial expert specialising in financial strategy and corporate development. Ioannis Kotsis – Quality Assurance Lead: EASA-approved Design Engineer with aerospace engineering and military/commercial simulation experience. Why us: The team combines operational credibility, trusted institutional relationships and the engineering and business capability to execute. Its founders have already helped build advanced synthetic-training capability within a NATO air force. VRA now transforms that hands-on experience, instructor expertise and architectural know-how into a scalable, AI-enabled commercial capability.
Funding Needs
Virtual Red Air is raising €1.5M in pre-seed funding over a 24-month horizon to progress from its validated blueprint to a demonstrable, contract-ready and revenue-generating capability, targeting its first defence customer. The funding will primarily support the development and validation of VRA’s technology and AI-enabled synthetic-training capability, the establishment of the infrastructure required to demonstrate and deliver its services, and the expansion of the core engineering, operational and instructor team. It will also support market development, customer demonstrations and pilot activities, strategic partnerships, and the operational and compliance requirements associated with entering the European defence market. The investment will be deployed progressively against technical and commercial milestones, reducing execution risk while building the evidence, maturity and market traction required for customer adoption. This pre-seed round represents the first stage of VRA’s funding roadmap, with future financing linked to demonstrated traction and business growth.
